PostHeaderIcon If you Know Homeostasis, you Know Health – TBoSS #8

The To Be of Service Show #8 (TBoSS)

John Daly here,

I thought I’d go over a term that I use quite frequently when I’m discussing health with people and that is “Homeostasis”. Though I’ve expanded the definition of the word to include mental and emotional well-being, it does give a good foundation for understanding how the body perpetually tries to restore equilibrium to the body’s temperature (98.6F), it’s blood ph level (7.365) and even blood glucose levels during our day-to-day lives.

Understanding this process we can start to see that when we reduce the stressful foods, relationships and lifestyle choices from our lives we can open ourselves to a higher degree of well-being.

Research I recommend on these subjects:

Dr. Robert Young’s “The pH Miracle”

&

“The Genius of Charles Darwin” won “Best TV Documentary Series of 2008″ at the British Broadcast Awards.

Randolph Nesse is the co-author of “Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine” (along with George C. Williams).

Richard Dawkins is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science author. He was formerly Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He was voted Britain’s leading public intellectual by readers of Prospect magazine and was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” for 2007.

Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book “The Selfish Gene”, which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term “meme”. He is a prominent critic of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book “The Blind Watchmaker”, he argued against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he described evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker. He has since written several popular science books, and makes regular television and radio appearances, predominantly discussing these topics.

Dawkins is an atheist, secular humanist, sceptic, scientific rationalist, and supporter of the Brights movement. In his 2006 book “The God Delusion”, he contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that faith qualifies as a delusion ? as a fixed false belief.

PostHeaderIcon Black Males in Schools: Mental Health, Wellness and the Misdiagnosis of ADHD

Dr. Ivory A. Toldson presents findings from “Breaking Barriers: Plotting the Path to Academic Success for School-Age African-American Males.”

Quality of life, as measured by how happy the student felt about his life, was the strongest emotional predictor of academic success among school-age black males. Academically successful African-American males were almost twice as likely to report feeling happy about the quality of their life when compared to those with failing grades. Feeling tired in the morning and feeling lonely were additional mental health factors that significantly impaired academic functioning among black male students.

Presentation at “Breaking Barriers: The Obama Administration, The 111th Congress and the Future of School-age Black Males” The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), along with Howard Universitys School of Education and the Open Society Institutes Campaign for Black Male Achievement, hosted the forum. The three-hour event took place in the Senate Caucus Room (SR-325) of the Russell Senate Office Building on Friday April 24.
